Summer 2019

Summer 2019, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy & Switzerland

25th August 2019 – 15th September 2019

What a fabulous 3 week tour! Starting with a poignant visit to Ypres, where we visited the Menin Gate to see the daily ‘Last Post’ ceremony, we then travelled to the historical city of Trier (complete with Roman Amitheatre) to start our tour of the magnificent Moselle Valley. We camped amongst the vinyards at Trier Farm and were disappointed not to eat at the farm restaurant which is only open Wednesday to Saturday.

The Moselle was stunning! Beautiful scenery, magnificent river and delightful villages. But little, if any, mobile phone coverage! Well done Vodafone! Bit difficult to keep in touch with our business, when we have no signal! So, we didn’t dally, choosing instead to sprint along the valley, stopping briefly at the wonderful towns and overnighting at Bernkastel-Kues. Lots of cycling opportunites, dodging the rain and being completely useless at finding the historical part of the town. Which, from the Knaus campsite, is over the bridge by the way!

Leaving the Moselle short of Konblenz, we travelled to Limburg, en-route to the ‘Romantic Road’. A ‘better than expected’ stopover, by the river, in an old medieval town.

The Romantic Road, is a much marketed route connecting a series of towns between Wurzburg and Fussen. The highlight, for us, was the beautiful town of Rothenburg on der Tauber. A stunning Bavarian walled, medieval town dating back to the 1st century. We stayed at Campingplatz Tauber-Idyll. Immaculate site, friendly owners, pre-booking recommended, as it’s  a small site. Ony 20 mins (uphill!) walk to the town.

Our tour ended at Fussen, with it’s beautiful lakes, stunning Neuchwanstein castle and crystal clear waters. Could spend a week here, so must come back!

Next onto Innsbruck, staying at the Hotel Bon Alpina, Igls, Innsbruck. For a weeks walking holiday with our great friends, Moira and Jamie. Fantastic week, mixed weather, but stunning walks and scenery. The highlight being the Patscherkofelbahn cable car and walk to the summit, with it’s fabulous views across Innsbruck.

After a brilliant week, exploring Innsbruck, Igls and it’s surrounding areas, we headed over the mountains to Venice. What can I say. I’m in love with the city! We stayed at Camping Fusina (€76 for 2 nights), took the water taxis across the lagoon to the city (best way to appraoch the city!) and walked miles, exploring canals, buildings and the buzz of the city. Definately HAVE to come back!

Next, we decided to drive north. The miles were taking their toll. Ideally, this route should take a couple of months and we were spending too long driving in the motorhome!

After a quick message to friends, Terri & Martin Cody-Owen recommended we stayed at Magic Lake Camping, Lake Como. Thanks guys! It was a great spot. Mid September, is out if season, so probably best to come earlier. But still beautiful and  lots of lakeside cycling.

From Como, we went over the border to Switzerland via the 17km Gotthard Tunnel Pass to Lucerne. Staying at Camping Lido International. It was a lovely walk, along the shores of the lake, into Lucerne. Beautiful city, amazing wooden bridges, crystal clear waters and the saddest lion I’ve ever seen! Perfect place to stay en-route from Italy to the UK.

Having spent a few days in most places, we spent a full and long day travelling to Ghent. Staying at Camping Blaarmeersen in Ghent. It transpires that the 13th September is something of a celebration in Ghent. Next time need to pre-book tickets!

And finally, we’re on our way back to Blighty! Time to catch up on Brexit and see if we can, so easily, continue our European travels. Lets hope so!
